Humanitarians II

1958 – Washington National Cathedral – North Outer Aisle

This window also has a very busy impressionistic style, though the border has more structure than in Humanitarians I.  With more than ten figures in each lancet, one has to work to focus on the individual stories.  Rowan and Irene were certainly aware of its position in the cathedral and Jewels of Light points out that “deeper scarlets and blues harmonize with Universal Peace window in the Kellogg Bay to the right.”

Iconography

The left lancet honors thirteenth century humanitarian Elizabeth of Hungary, founder of many hospitals. From the bottom up she is seen in several settings ministering to the poor until at the top, Christ is at her death bed. 

The right lancet features two humanitarians, Father Damien who ministered to lepers in Hawaii, and founder of the Salvation Army William Booth.  Father Damien is in the top half among a group of lepers.  A Salvation Army band is backing up William Booth and his work in the lower half. The inscription crossing these two lancets reads “And the greatest of these is love.”
