Air
1959 – Saint Alban’s Church, Washington, DC
In this window Rowan and Irene create a breezy sense of motion that is quite different that the motion in the Water window, on the Sout side of the choir clerestory. Here the glass shapes flow into each other, where as in the water window they collide. The edges are all soft and there is very little painting to block the light.
Iconography
This is one of four abstract windows celebrating the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water. This one is air and it seems as if billowing currents of air are swirling upward around some sort of landscape. We hope that future research will uncover Rowan and Irene’s thinking behind these windows.
