Water

1959 – Saint Alban’s Church, Washington, DC

In this abstract design Rowan and Irene create a flowing turbulence that has a wonderful energy within it. The liquid qualities of the glass itself contribute to the effervescent feeling in the window.  The painting on the glass is sparse and adds an additional layer of motion.

Iconography

This is one of four abstract windows celebrating the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water.  This one is water and it seems as if streams of air bubbles are rising from this tumultuous sea. We hope that future research will uncover Rowan and Irene’s thinking behind these windows.
