Earth

1959 – Saint Alban’s Church, Washington, DC

This window features a playful mixture of tiny, colorful shapes and large, leafy forms.  The reds are dark and mysterious and they offset the highlights of green, yellow and blue.  The glass that is allowed to shine through has no painting or crosshatching to mute the light

Iconography

This is one of four abstract windows celebrating the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water.  This one is earth and the earth tones near the bottom give rise to the leafy vegetation. The tiny shapes seem almost like primal elements in the soil that are nourishing this growth.  We hope that future research will uncover Rowan and Irene’s thinking behind these windows.
