Gable Wheel

1982 – Washington National Cathedral – Pilgrim Observation Gallery, West End

This small window high in the cathedral’s west end is made of magnificent, faceted glass.  This is very thick glass that Dieter chisels on an anvil.  This creates facets that scatter the light.

Iconography

Theis is a wheel design that adorns the gable at the west end.   It is an abstract design the echoes and precedes the much larger West Rose that lies below it. It echoes it in that the abstract designs are similar to the interlacing Celtic designs of the West Rose.  It precedes it in that it is a mode of the ancient rose windows that used this wheel form.
