Grapes

1955 – Church of the Nativity and Holy Comforter, Baltimore, MD

This is the second of the two Eucharist-themed windows that Rowan and Irene created to frame the double doors at the west end of the church.  Instead of using painting or crosshatching on the reds in these windows,  they control the light here solely by their choice of glass. The mixture of reds makes for a wonderful texture that sets off the blue grapes perfectly and ties this window to its complement on the other side of the entrance.

Iconography

Grapes are the source of wine, the second element of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus’ instructions to his followers at the Last Supper, when he instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist, were to drink from the cup of wine, “for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:26-29)
